Iligan: The city of magnificent waterfalls

An article published in Yahoo News says this:

Too bad anytime soon, people might not be able to enjoy the Maria Cristina's grandeur. If privatization pushes through, will Iligan still be able to boast of its magnificent waterfalls? Why should we allow Mindanao's treasures to fall in private, capitalist hands?

Let us do something about it! Everyone, let us unite and make sure Mindanao's children will still have these treasures to enjoy.

Women’s group opposes privatization of Agus-Pulangi plant

By Lito Rulona

THE Mindanao Commission on Women has vowed to collect 1 million signatures and pledges totalling P1-billion to buy from the government the Agus-Pulangi Hydro Power Plant and thus prevent its privatization.
In an interview, Irene “Inday” Santiago, head of the Mindanao Commission on Women and one of the convenors of the “Pipol’s Power” movement, said they aim to gather enough signatures before the third State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino III.
“We will also present the P1-billion pledges of the people to buy-out the Agus-Pulangi Plant. The people especially, the women’s group, are willing to chip in at least P50 each to raise P1.05-billion as seed fund,” she said.
She said the signatures and pledges would become symbolic of telling the President that Mindanao is not willing to yield to government’s plan of privatizing the remaining Agus-Pulangui complex.
The group said a government website has already put at auction the complex despite the representation made by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), which claimed in a press conference that it would present data to the President showing that “the hydroelectric plants have been generating incomes for government.”
“Although the privatization and sale of the complex have been deferred through a Congressional resolution, President Aquino has repeatedly said that only the privatization of Agus-Pulangui can provide reliable energy for Mindanao,” said another statement by the group posted on its website.
It added that the movement would like to provide “venue through which the rest of the Mindanaoan population can participate in claiming back the power to have a say on the island’s vast energy resources and at the same time positively resist decisions reached against their will and interest.”
Patricia Mae Ruivivar of Pipol’s Power said the movement is participated by eight Mindanao-wide and national organizations “including the workers of the government power sector.”
The movement has been launched near Maria Cristina Falls, where the National Power Corp. (Napocor) holds office. Workers of the Napocor and the Lanao Power Consumers Power Federation attended the launching. It was also launched in Maramag, Bukidnon, where employees of the Pulangui IV power plant attended, as well as in the Caraga region.
The group is looking at setting up a Mindanao Power Commission to run the Agus and Pulangi power complexes.
In a press conference held Thursday last week, Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno and Vice Gov. Norris Babiera supported the move to oppose the planned privatization.
